The ancient Game of Chess

Chess is an immensely popular strategic game, played throughout history by intellectuals and royalty. No longer restricted to a certain class, the popularity of chess lies in the fact that every player can develop his/her own strategies to play it. Patience and strategic thinking are prerequisites for playing the game of chess. With every piece having a rule associated to it, it is not difficult to see why the capability to play chess well is considered a sign of intelligence.

Played on a board with 64 squares, which are alternatively black and white in colour, chess is a two player game. Both players are armed with sixteen pieces each, which is their army. Every piece has a distinct identity and the player can move each piece in a particular manner only. These rules form the basis of the game and need to be understood before you begin playing. The ultimate objective of chess is to beat the king of the opponent and the first person to do that wins the game.

Chess is an ancient game and though the exact place of its origin is a matter of debate, it is believed to have been invented during the 6th century in India. But, that form of the game was much different from the chess we play today. Chess eventually travelled through different countries over the next few centuries, which brought many changes to the actual version. Slowly, this great game spread to many countries in Europe and Asia. Chess was particularly popular with the royals of countries like India, China etc.

Having now become an official indoor sport, the strategic planning and tactics used in chess are very useful for the development of the brain. This is the reason that most schools encourage chess as a good indoor game. Passion for the game is a must if you wish to be good at playing chess. In fact, the game doesn't end even after you have stopped playing, as many enthusiasts think up strategies and winning moves during their normal course of the day.

Today chess is also available online through different websites and portals. Downloadable versions of the game are another option, but in those, you can only play against the computer. Besides these, there are various chess clubs where you can meet people and play your favourite game with them. So if you are a kind of person who likes to play skill and mind games, and are ready to put your brains to the test then chess is the best game for you.
