Checkers

Checkers is an alltime Favourite!

Checkers is one board game, other than carom, that is popular in every country and among the people of all age groups. A two player board game, checkers is played with two sets of 12 discs and requires a bit of strategic planning. It forces the players to think differently in every game they play, eliminating the chance of getting bored of it. Unlike, some more difficult and intense strategic games, checkers is a much lighter and fun game and this is the reason of its immense popularity among children and adults alike.

Checkers is an ancient game with excavators having found a game in Iraq, which resembles today's checkers game, which is almost 5,000 years old. But the board of that game is a little different. The number of checkers used in that game and the complete set of rules are also unknown. Another game called the Alquerque, which was played in the Egypt in 1400 B.C. was also very similar to today's checkers. Even though, the checkers we play today is very different from the one found in the excavations, the basic logic behind the game remains the same.

Checkers is also known as Draughts in many countries and several variations of this game also exist. Before you begin playing, understanding the basics involved with a traditional game of checkers is important. This includes facts such as, the game is played on a board with 64 squares of red and black colours and that players are required to place their discs on the 12 nearest black squares. The players, then alternatively move their discs. A player can only move on the dark squares and thus, will only be able to move diagonally. The aim of this game is to capture all of your opponent's discs by jumping over them. But the catch is that you need to land on an empty square after jumping, otherwise the move won't count.

Today, the game of checkers has evolved into an online form as well. There are many online websites where you can play checkers, and it is fast becoming one of the most popular board games online. Another good thing about playing this game online is that you don't have to find a partner to play with; just log on to a website and you will find many people to play the game with you. Another option is to download the PC version of this game, and play either against the computer or your friend. Whatever be your form of choice, checkers is a great way to have fun.
