Poker, the most famous Card Game in the World!
Poker has been made famous all over the world, with appearances in movies, books, the Internet and even as the source of words such as “bluffing” and “poker faced”. With a unique set of rules, Poker has a large number of variations, but they all revolve around the same basic logic. The betting system plays an integral part of Poker, and also makes it unique. The game begins with either a forced bet, or a pre-decided one, and all players then play on to meet this requirement.
Believed to be a descendent of a German game known as Pochspiel, which contained a lot of the characteristics that Poker is known for, such as hand rankings, bluffing and betting, Poker is also said to resemble a Persian game known as As Nas. But the debate does not end there, many historians believe that Poker was in fact a descendent of Poque, which is a French game.
Today Poker is immensely popular, with events such as the World Series of Poker, and World Poker Tour becoming extremely competitive. Poker pros are celebrities, who enjoy the good life. You could be one of them too, but you need to learn to walk before you run. So read on to find out about the basics of Poker.
Poker is a two to six players' game, and begins with the dealer shuffling the cards and then dealing them out to the players, starting with the one to his right. Now the betting rounds begin and during the course of the round, players replace cards in hand, developing it by either accepting additional cards or by replacing existing ones.
At the end of the round all the bets are collected, provided none of the players chose to call the bet but went on for a fold, in which case the hand ends immediately. The player who made the bet is then given the pot, and no one is required to show their cards, and the next hand begins soon after.
It is at this point that the most important aspect of Poker comes into the picture, ‘bluffing'. It is basically the art of lying about the cards you hold, in order to push your opponents off the track and deter them from calling your bet/bluff. The reason its called an “art” is because fooling a group of people with your facial expressions, really takes a lot of effort, and frankly not everyone is good at it, at least not without enough practice.
To end the game, after the last round of betting, if there is only one player, he wins, and if not a showdown occurs. This requires the players to reveal all their hidden cards and then their hands are evaluated. The better hand, according to the variation of Poker you are playing, wins the game.
It might sound a little complicated, and it does require a lot of practice, so it is best you do not start off with betting for money, as gambling is illegal in several countries. Play for fun, and enjoy the interesting parts of this interesting game. Start practicing your poker face in front of the mirror right away, and make sure you win all bets the next time you play Poker.
