Diy Concrete Driveway

DIY concrete driveway projects can be quite time consuming and a lot of hard work, but you will feel an immense sense of pride once you have completed a DIY concrete driveway. Most do-it-yourself enthusiasts either mix their concrete by hand or in a mixer, but if your drive is a long one, you may want to consider the option of ordering it ready mixed. This will add to the cost, but it will simplify your DIY concrete driveway project and you will complete the job a lot more quickly.

DIY Concrete Driveway Options

The ready mixed option is one that is available worldwide. What you do is to order the specific mix you want, usually according to strength, which will be given in MPa (or megapascals). For example a low strength mix will be about 10 to 15 MPa, while a medium strength mix, which is more suitable for driveways, should be between 20 and 25 MPa. They will also ask what size stone you want, and they might also ask you what slump you require.

Slump tests are a very important part of concrete construction work, but not something that do-it-yourselfers usually worry about. What the test does is to measure, exactly, the water content, the consistency and other properties in fresh concrete (which is what it is called when it has just been mixed and hasn't started to set and cure). The more water you add to the mix, the more it will slump, or collapse. You have to be careful not to add too much water to your mix because, even though it will make it easier for you to place, it will make it weaker in the long run. Also the stone will be more likely to segregate (or separate) from the rest of the mix, instead of forming a good cohesive whole that you will be able to drive on.

When you order "readymix" you will also be asked to specify quantity, which will be determined by the size of the truck delivering the mix to you, 6 m3 for example. One truck load may be enough, but for a really long drive you might need more. They will also want to know when you need delivery. If you order more than one load, make sure delivery is staggered.

When the truck arrives, you will need to be ready and waiting, because they will discharge the entire load at one time. You will then have to ferry it in wheelbarrows to exactly the place that you need it, before compacting and levelling it for your own very special DIY concrete driveway.
