The art of drawing is one way in which artistic form can be expressed, and its simple, no-fuss accessibility make it a great way to develop your artistic skills. Most of us have dabbled in this art form in some way, whether at school or by doodling in the margin. The artistic urge is a strong one and even if we don't think we are any good, we inevitably end up decorating or defacing some surface with our expressions. But what if you want to learn more about the skills that could take your work up a step or two? Maybe you want to get into art, but are looking for somewhere to start? Or are you already filling sketch books and wondering where to go next? This is a space where we hope to give you some pointers, encourage you in your art and have a lot of fun doing it.

Drawing is basically using a tool to leave your mark in whatever form on a surface of some kind. Of course the one we usually think of is a pencil on paper, but there is a huge range of mediums. Think of differing grades of graphite, coloured pencils, wax crayons, felt tips, charcoal, pastels, pens and inks, or brushes. That list offers a lot of variation and options. Maybe one appeals to you, and you want to start with that. Play around with it, get the feel of it and see what comes naturally. Drawing is essentially different from painting in that all the work happens on the chosen surface, you cannot mix the colours before applying them, as painting allows, but must do all your colour magic right there. So you learn skills like blending, stippling, cross hatching and hatching. Don't worry if these terms are unfamiliar to you, you have probably done them already but didn't know it. They are all techniques commonly used in drawing, easily learned.

So where do you learn all these fabulous techniques? There's nothing like hands-on experience, and doing a course is a great place to start. Check out the courses available through your local council, or evening classes at a school or college. Ask at your local art shop, it's a great place to find out what is on offer in your area. Look online, read books, buy a magazine? There are so many sources of information on this popular hobby, you will certainly be inspired.

Drawing as a hobby can be a lifelong source of pleasure, for both you and those around you. Kids love having someone draw for them, and they are completely non-critical!
