The modern hobby of arts and crafts have their roots in the late 19th century. The practices enjoyed by many today as valued artistic and creative expressions were once skills at risk of being lost by the advent of the Industrial Revolution.

At this time, the world was revolutionised by machines and this led to great conflict of interest. The advantages of speed, affordability and uniformity were seen by many as threats to quality and style.

The movement began in England, led by William Morris, but soon its influence spread to Europe and America. The term refers to the principle of applied design which is dominated by hand fabrication. Cabinet making, decorative art, architecture, crafts and cottage garden designs were all influenced by the growing trend. In order to express the beauty inherent in craft, some products were deliberately left slightly unfinished resulting in a certain rustic and robust effect.

Today, we have a wide range of arts and crafts to pursue. It's interesting to think that many of these skills may have been lost if it were not for the dedication of certain artisans and patrons of the arts. We can enjoy this hobby for our pleasure and relaxation, while knowing that in many cases we are continuing a long tradition.

There are also many advantages associated with the new technologies available today opening the door to innovation and creativity. It is a constantly evolving world. We are hoping to share some of that with you and learn from each other along the way.

This is the place to share your passion for the hobby of arts and crafts. We can't wait to hear from you!
