Kiteboarding - Kite Boarding
Kiteboarding or Kite Boarding brought Kite Skiing to the Oceans!
Kiteboarding is a sport that has rapidly gained popularity on beaches and resorts as a means of expanding upon the idea of simply surfing across water. Similar to surfing in most aspects, Kite boarding allows the rider to experience surfing and wakeboarding in one go. Not only does the sport involve gliding over the surface of the water, it also gives the rider the experience of flying through the air while performing various tricks under the influence of a kite.
The sport of kiteboarding is said to have begun as a means of bringing kite skiing to the oceans. In the 1970s, kite skiing was introduced to the world as a revolutionary sport that involved a large parafoil kite and a rider wearing skis and using the kite to catch the wind and propel himself/herself at great speeds. In the 1990s, there was another major shift in the sport as kite buggying came into being. Soon, the entire system of using a kite to ski or move along the surface of the earth and on snow transformed into being able to move along on water. A two-ski and parafoil kite combo soon gave way to a single board and kite combo and the sport of kite boarding was born.
If you are just getting started on kite boarding then you are in for a treat. But, like all sports, there is the importance of the gear that you need to own or use that comes first and foremost. The gear used in kite boarding is not just to help you surf and hit big air, it is also meant to ensure you are safe when out there enjoying yourself.
Helmets and the personal floatation device are a must unless of course you are highly experienced at both flying and swimming and of course, banging your head into hard objects and surviving. A safety hook knife is vital when you are looking to break through those knots and tangles in a sticky situation while something like a board leash will help you keep track of your board when wiped out. There are other important parts of the attire such as the impact vest that protects your torso from collision and even bad landings. And finally the most important aspect of kite boarding is the kite itself.
Kites come in two basic formats - Foil Kites and Leading Edge Inflatable kites (LEI). LEI kites are quite popular amongst the kite boarding fraternity as they are extremely responsive to the rider. Unlike Foil kites, LEI kites do not sink in water and that means that a single crash doesn't mean a salvage operation for the kite and then a return to dry shores for re-launch. You can start off again from the water itself.
The best place for you to learn the sport is from a trained instructor. There are many schools for kite boarding near almost every resort and beach where the sport is allowed. It is a sport that requires a lot of skill and control, which makes knowing the right technique the most important thing at that time. Kite boarding is a dangerous sport and mishaps do happen where onlookers, beachgoers and swimmers can get hurt along with the kite rider him/her self.
Picking the right kite is also very important and it is important to have an access to varied sizes so that depending on the speed of the wind, you can get the kite you need to safely enjoy kite boarding. The basic rule to follow is that the stronger the wind, the lesser should the kite?s surface area be as you don't need much to move fast.
A professional trainer will be able to guide you on how to do the basics right and then help you move onto the higher, more complex parts of kiteboarding. The instructors teach you how to launch the kite properly, land safely and maneuver the kite the way you want to while ensuring that you and the people around you are safe. They also teach you various methods to use the safety gear and get out of tight situations.
Like all sports, kite boarding also involves various other elements than the rider himself. This means that there needs to be a certain level of respect and understanding for the natural conditions and surrounding areas. As time goes by, you may master these areas with regular practice but even then, being careful is the best way to enjoy kite boarding.
The conditions are a huge determining factor when it comes to kiteboarding. A strong favourable wind is absolutely essential and should be strong enough to lift you up with your kite. However, you need to be careful about the direction it takes you in because you wouldn't want to end up crashing into the nearby cliff or on the rocks.
Kite boarding is a wonderful way to have fun on the beach but it is a dangerous sport and is not allowed everywhere. It is not recommended that anybody begin kite boarding without proper guidance and practice. Once you are ready to take on the waves and the wind, just strap yourself in and be ready to enjoy your kiteboarding ride.
