Go is ancient Chinese game which is immensely popular, mainly with adults, as well as children with an inclination towards strategic thinking. Played on a board that has nineteen rows with nineteen squares in each one of them; Go is a great hobby for people looking to increase their strategic planning skills. But Go is as much about having fun as it is about using your brains, as you aim to beat your opponent by capturing the largest area on the board.
The History of GO
The game of Go was invented in China and has been around for over two thousand years. According to a popular story, Go was invented on the orders of Yao, who was a Chinese king. He wanted his palace counselor to develop a game that would instill concentration and a sense of discipline in his son. Another version of the story states that Go was invented after observing the war strategies of tribes in China. In ancient times, Go was actually perceived to be a game of the upper class in China. This game was given the rank of one of the four refined arts of the country.
It doesn't matter which of these stories is true, but one thing is definite fact that Go is a game that not only helps us improve concentration, but also instills a habit of thinking ahead. In the earlier versions of Go, there were only seventeen rows with seventeen columns in each, but during the Tang Dynasty, the current version of the board was introduced, which eventually became the standard version. Go is played on a board with black and white stones and both players have to try and capture the largest area on the board. While doing this, the players also have to strategize and place their own stones on the board in such a way that they do not get captured by the opponent.
If you want to play Go with a friend, then you can purchase it from your local toy or hobby store. In some areas, you may have to search for it a little bit, but if you have any ethnic Chinese markets in your area, then you might find it there. But don't worry if you don't find it anywhere as the game of Go is easily available online. Play it with a friend or someone sitting thousands of miles away, but definitely do make it a point to try your hand at Go at least once.
