Free Boat Building

Free Boat building - do it cheaper!

Free boat building or learning how to build a boat for free is something that many of us would love to do. While the boats itself may not be free, this free boat building guide will help you breeze through the learning process and the best part is that it doesn't cost a thing. This article can be used as a free boat building lesson, almost like a self-help book, teaching you the basics over the Internet.

To begin your free boat building lesson, first thing you need to do to is get your hands on some boat plans. While bigger boats have naval architects, who create and devise these plans, the smaller boats don't really require expansive detailing or features meaning that there is hardly much for you to look out for, especially if you are a beginner.

The next thing on your free boat building course is picking the kind of boat you would like to build. There are many different kinds of boats and if you are looking at wooden boat building as the starting point, then it will be easier for you to find materials for low costs, and tools & equipment to create your boat. You can also pick steel or aluminum as the building materials however, if you are a beginner, wood comes highly recommended for you.

Chapter 3 of the free boat building lesson will deal with the materials and where to get them. If you live in a town that is near a water body, like a lake, river or ocean even, you are likely to find a lot of stores near these landmarks that cater solely to boat builders. They sell plans, materials, tools and other all-important accessories such as glues, waterproof coating materials and the like.

Once you have your plan, your materials and the tools, you need a building space and the garage will suit just fine for chapter 4 of your free boat building lesson. Depending on the kind of boat you are looking to build, you will need to construct a frame or cut the wood down to size. Once you are past this step, putting these planks of wood (or sheets of plywood depending on what model you are building) together with glue, staples and nails will be the next step.

The glue takes a while to settle into full strength and that time can be spent in working on the finishing aspect of the boat. Your free boat building guide will only be able to help you in telling you the options that you have when considering a finishing for your boat. The choice, though, is entirely yours and depending on your time, budget and effort constraints, you can choose anything from a high class Mahogany finish to a simple paint job to cover the basic structure.

The base of the boat has to be made water proof and although wood has natural waterproofing, you will need to put layers of epoxy on the inside and outside of the bottom of the boat to ensure no seepage. Gaps have to be filled out with epoxy while most of the adhesives that you will use to put your boat together will already be epoxy based.

The final part of the free boat building guide deals with care for your boat. While a well-built wooden boat will not require much care for many months, you always need to check the bottom of the boat for damage to the overall structure, fresh or salt water organisms that may have crept into the wood as well as breakages or cracks in the water proof layer coating. The insides of the boat may require varied levels of care depending on what you have on it.

Electrical equipment might need more frequent checks of the wiring & connections while mechanical equipment might need regular maintenance as well.

As part of the free boat building lesson, you also get a special advice package for free - Remember to regularly check your safety equipment, i.e. flares, lifejackets, first aid kits, etc. as they need to be in top shape when you are out there in the middle of the lake.
