Choosing a digital camera can be a daunting task, particularly if you've never done it before. There are various different types, but the digital SLR camera tops the list. Known in the trade as a D-SLR (digital single lens reflex), this is the type that professionals and some serious amateurs and hobbyists prefer to use. The digital SLR camera is considerably more expensive than other types, although some are more expensive than others. The entire photographic kit can also vary in price, depending on lenses, because the digital SLR camera can be used with any number of different lenses. It's entirely your choice.
If you decide to pay the price for a D-SLR you'll be getting yourself a camera that is a cut above the rest. How much of a cut is up to you to decide! But just so understand what you'll be getting, you need to know that all single lens reflex models let you view whatever it is you are taking a picture of through the lens - via a reflex mirror. That's where the joke about superb photographs being done with mirrors comes from. Basically the reflex mirror directs light from the lens onto the sensor of the camera, and then to the viewfinder through a special kind of prism that is inside the body. Very clever!
Look at other types and you will see that you have to look through a viewfinder or at a liquid crystal display (LCD) screen to see what you are shooting. It basically shows you a review of what you are going to take, but it isn't totally accurate. Since you actually look through the lens of a D-SLR, what you see is what you get.
While you will normally get at least one "standard" lens with a D-SLR, the fact that they can be used with inter-changeable lenses is a huge selling point. For this reason the D-SLR provides unparalleled shooting versatility because you switch between modes, for example wide angle to medium zoom or telephoto, in an instant. But you don't have to buy all your lenses at once, you can keep adding to your equipment over time, as you can afford to. That's one of the great advantages of the digital SLR camera.
