Digital camera equipment has got cheaper and cheaper over the past few years, making it accessible to an ever-growing number of people. Digital camera equipment has also become increasingly versatile making it suitable for hobbyists and professionals alike. But before you dash out to buy your own digital camera equipment, assess what you need.
Choosing the right camera is a challenge that relates to both function and price. Generally the best advice is to buy the best that you can afford. But there is also no point in spending a fortune on an expensive digital single lens reflex (D-SLR) model with several inter-changeable lenses, if you are only going to use it once in a while. There are some superb high-end cameras that will do the job you need just as well, and the will cost you a lot less. Similarly, if you are working to a tight budget, it doesn't always pay to buy the cheapest you can find. For example if you buy a basic digital camera with a resolution of only 2 megapixels (MP) you will only be able to print out photographs that are quite small.

Instead of using film, digital cameras have a special charge coupled device (CCD) we call a sensor. Just like film, it is also sensitive to light. But instead of the image being captured on film, the sensor converts what is exposed onto it into an electric form that becomes digital information.
When we refer to pixels, we mean the tiny bits on the sensor that together make up the photograph. One megapixel contains a million pixels. This means that if a 2 MP model will have the capacity to produce a photograph with two million pixels. The larger the photograph, the more spread out the pixels will need to be, and so the grainer the picture will appear. This in turn means that the more pixels in your photograph, the more detail you will have been able to capture - and therefore the higher the resolution will be.
A very important fact to remember is that you can decrease the number of pixels, but you cannot increase them without losing quality. This is why megapixels are so important when we look for suitable digital camera equipment.
