In the 1950s, radio controlled technology was built mainly on an experimental scale where the equipment was generally self-built by people involved in building , Magic Card RC gadgets. The Radio Controllers were controlled by a single channel and were extremely demanding on the batteries. Soon, with the advancements in development of electronics, multi-channel equipment started entering the markets and their costs dropped as well. These radios were ideal to generate proportionally coded signals, which were then translated into actions by Servomechanisms.
Today, 4-channel radio controllers are the most common amongst general RC hobbyists. These controllers offer enough freedom to perform various basic tasks whether you are using an RC plane, RC Boat or RC Cars. While basic 2-channel controllers only offer the ability for accelerating/decelerating and turning right and left, 4-channel radio controllers go much beyond this. A typical 4-channel radio controller for an RC Aircraft would involve controls for a throttle, elevation control i.e. dives or climbs, turns towards left or right and rolling to the left or right.
While 2-channel radio controllers are quite sufficient for RC cars and RC Boats, for more advanced usage, you should look at configuring a 4-channel radio controller. While you can fly an RC plane with a 2- or 3-channel radio controller, a 4-channel controller offers a greater degree of precision.
If you are looking for a higher degree of control over the RC model, then you can always go in for a 6-channel radio controller. This type of controller is useful for you if you are flying something on the lines of RC Jets.
