Classical Mosaics
Breaking up materials (stone, smalti or "found" pieces) , and then piecing them together into infinite forms, is always both satisfying and exasperating; but also provides for solitary moments of introspection and meditation, of expansive and abstract thought. There is, of course, finality offered in a completed piece, which may offer a quiet satisfaction and joy, or create feelings of anxiety. The variety and combination of materials, which may require severity of design on the one hand, while allowing you to introduce personal experiences on the other hand effectively allow you to create something in your own unique vision.

Mosaic Matters
Mosaic Matters - the online magazine for all things mosaic. Mosaics are designs or pictures created by embedding small pieces of glass, stone, terracotta etc. into a bed of cement or other form of fixative. This form of decoration is often used for panels or on floors, but is especially effective on curved surfaces, such as ceilings and vaults. Mosaics are found both indoors and outdoors.

Zebra Mosaic: Sophie Verrecchia
Explore Sophie's world of creating mosaics in and around the home. After working carefully, quietly for many years as a textile and graphic designer in Paris, New York and Sydney, I found that noisy plate breaking is my passion. Now everyday I smash, shatter and cut plates, unglazed ceramics, shiny glass titles, stone & marble, smalti, gold & silver mirrors.
