Kundalini Yoga
|
Kundalini yoga may not be as well known as the more traditional style of yoga, but it is an intensely powerful system which can increase the practitioner’s chance of personal growth.
Known as ‘lock of hair of the beloved’ Kundalini yoga focuses on awakening all of the energy that lies within us all and this is done by using breathing exercises, chanting, meditation and postures.
For this particular style of yoga, it is most beneficial for students to be able to attend a class so that the teacher can guide the student through this powerful form of yoga. Although there are some excellent books and information available on kundalini yoga, there is no substitution for receiving direct supervision from a qualified teacher.
This is a style that can be enjoyed by all who wish to practice it as it requires no previous skills or experience within yoga. Kundalini yoga provides the tools and techniques to be able to harness an energy that is contained within all of us. There are thousands of exercise sets so it is a good style to learn for those students who like to be able to see a constant progression and continual opportunities to learn more.
Each class will work on warm-ups for the spinal area which relates to this inner energy and there is also much work and focus on meditation. The exercises themselves last for approximately 1-3 minutes although the following disciplines are also included:
Mantra’s: Using sound and vibrations
Chakra’s: Energy is allowed to become free-flowing through the Chakras which respond to frequency and specific areas such as the heart.
Mudra’s: These are positions of the hand and body poses held during meditations or exercise.
Some students start to feel a trembling or light-headed sensation initially but this occurs due to cleansing of toxins both on a physical or mental level. It is worth the student realising that this is a lifelong practice which is designed to encourage a higher consciousness.
