There are so many different types of yoga that for those who are inexperienced but interested, it can be difficult to know where to start. Fortunately there is much information available on the subject either through books, DVD’s or by searching the internet for web pages specialising in offering up to date information for the enthusiast.
Most people begin their yogic journey by way of Hatha yoga as this focuses more on the physical exercises which can tone and limber up every part of the body. Particular attention should be paid to the correct alignment of each yoga pose, also known as asana’s. Attending a class with an enthusiastic and qualified teacher is important as the teacher can guide and encourage the student to try a variety of new poses aimed at improving and conditioning various parts of the body.
Hatha yoga however, incorporates various styles contained within it such as:
- Iyengar
- Bikram
- Ashtanga
These styles have their own way of teaching their students.
Iyengar for example uses belts, blocks and bolsters to help the student feel the maximum benefits of each pose even if the student is not able to reach the maximum position due to the body being too inflexible.
For the regular student of yoga there are many benefits which can be gained by incorporating yoga into their everyday lifestyle. Certainly an increase in flexibility and suppleness is expected and surprisingly, noticeable changes to the physique are felt after only several days of practice, and improvements continue to be felt.
Yoga also provides a real mind, body and spirit connection and in fact, yoga does mean ‘union’. By incorporating time into learning meditation and the various breathing exercises, this helps the student to feel calmer and more at peace with themselves in general.
Overall benefits include:
- Sense of clarity
- Inner confidence
- Additional energy
- Being able to sleep better
- Less stress
Regular practice of yoga will help the student to feel stronger, more flexible and it will help to balance energy flows within the body improving physique but also promoting an increase in mental awareness.
