Pet Mice

Mice can make wonderful pets especially for young children who would like to have pets of their own and possibly lack of space is a problem. It is easy to be able to source pet mice as pet shops usually have them in stock, alternatively, check out advertisements in your local press.
To keep happy healthy pet mice, it is wise to keep them in groups of their own kind, preferably same sex so as to avoid unwanted babies. Female mice can begin to breed at five weeks old and can produce litters at every three or four weeks so unwanted litters can soon start to occur.
Wire cages with a plastic tray floor is often best although a tank with a secure wire lid is also fine for keeping mice in. Make sure that you have a big enough space for your mice to live in and they do love to climb so add plenty of climbing material for them. They also love climbing through tubes and this will keep your mice interested in their surroundings.
Cleaning the cage should occur at least once a week, but male mice actually require more cleaning than females, mice like to be reassured by familiar smells so only remove soiled bedding and top up with fresh new bedding.
It is easy to source food for them as pet shops will always keep a good food mix for rodents available and it is important to remember that they should always have a fresh supply of water from a bottle attached to the side of the cage.
Pet mice should always be kept away from other more predatory pets but they should also be kept away from rats as they may be eaten, so never mix mice and rats in the same cage.
Pet mice are usually very friendly and they do rarely bite, but they still should be treated with respect. They can gradually get used to your scent by hand-feeding them and with them just becoming used to your hand in the cage.
