Pet Rabbits
|
Rabbits are naturally sociable pets and they do like to live in pairs or in groups. Rabbits can live up to ten years so it really is worth considering whether you have the time and lifestyle to be able to look after a pet rabbit long term. They do require plenty of room, safe away from predators but with plenty of stretching space. The hutch should also have a separate compartment so that they can have privacy as this is very important to their health and well-being.
When considering purchasing a rabbit, the following is important to secure before introducing the new family member to their home:
Hutch
Rabbit run
Food
Bedding
Water bottle
Pet rabbits and their care should always be supervised if young children are involved as they may not be ideal pets for very young children, they can be lovable and interesting pets to have around though providing they are well-looked after and are content.
Rabbits should be lively and alert and they should have regular vaccinations against potentially dangerous diseases such as: Myxomatosis. Teeth should be checked regularly also and if a discharge from the eyes or nose begins to occur, then it is worth taking them for a check up at the vets.
Food should be hay or grass and it is also good to offer a few fresh vegetables as well. Rabbits also enjoy fruit like apples and of course, dandelion leaves. Long haired varieties need much grooming and on a daily basis if possible, short haired varieties would need grooming about once a week.
Pet Rabbits need to be stimulated every day so providing them safe things to chew is a must such as apple wood, although good pet shops will provide some edible wooden chews which are safe for them to eat.
Try not to keep one rabbit on its own as it will become lonely, look out for adverts for rabbits in your local press and there may be those who need to be re-homed and this could make an ideal ‘friend’ for your pet rabbit.
