As a hobby, amateur astronomy is extremely popular because it can be enjoyed on so many different levels and by people of all ages. From simply observing the sky on a clear night, it can be a rewarding, relaxing and inspirational experience all at the same time. There are thousands of amateur astronomers sharing this same activity all over the world and it is fair to state that the majority of them share a fascination for the mysteries of the universe.

There are so many informative books that are readily available on amateur astronomy and of course, many websites which will provide a great deal of useful information suitable from those beginners through to those more advanced. As your passion for astronomy grows, it is worth finding out if there is a local astronomy group in your area as you can then combine your love and interest in astronomy with others, make many new friends and also take advantage of the wealth of knowledge that is around you. It is fair to state that the more that is learned about the night sky, the more addictive the hobby can become.

Although the use of a telescope makes your star gazing so much more rewarding, binoculars can be used also if investing in a telescope is not financially viable at the start. Even if binoculars are not available, there is still so much that can be seen with the naked eye, such as the constellations for example.

As with any hobby, practise makes perfect and continued practice observing the night sky is an absolute must, as this then increases your brain’s activity to be able to see more during the observations. Enjoy the simple act of sitting indoors by the window and gazing up at the night sky or choose a careful place out of doors in which to view the sky where visibility is so much better. On a mild evening, watching the night sky can be a therapeutic, relaxing and rewarding experience. It is worth remembering that amateur astronomy is a pastime which can be shared by close family, friends or even with neighbours, but equally it is a wonderful hobby which can be enjoyed alone also.
