Aikido is a non-aggressive style of martial arts using the basic principle ‘Do not fight force with force’ Translated it simply means ‘Harmony, Spirit, Way’.

It is ideal for those people who simply wish to learn a style of self-defence that has a good pedigree as those who study Aikido seek only to defend without injury and the style itself use very few kicks and punches, instead it directs all of the force from the attacker and makes use of throws, restraining techniques and locks. This redirection of the attacker’s strength enables the aikido student to continue to keep the attacker in a state of unbalance.

For those who really wish to excel at this form of martial art, it is worth remembering that Aikido takes longer to learn than many other styles but because of its content, it can also be practised by people of all ages including those who are much older in life. It has become increasingly more popular with women and also senior citizens. This is because Aikido does not focus so much on strength, speed or flexibility but it does alongside other martial arts, offers those who practise regularly a feeling of camaraderie with the other students and helps them to achieve an inner confidence.

There are many books available which teach the basics of the style and of course information is easily accessible by locating a good website specialising in this particular martial art. It is always good to read up on any sport or hobby before paying out for specialised kit or investing a large amount of time, but with Aikido, it is important to learn is at a club with a good instructor, who will guide the new student through all of the different locks, throws and restraining techniques. If there is a local club, then it is worth going to watch a class before joining, having a talk with the instructor after the class is invaluable too and you will receive much guidance at this point which will help you decide if it is for you.

It is thought that there are more than one million dedicated people studying this non-aggressive form of martial art world-wide.
