How to create your own Fantasy Land!
Drawing dragons is an exciting and somewhat different project and one which requires a great deal of imagination and enthusiasm for mythical creatures. Drawing dragons may not be an ideal subject for those artists who are used to studying or drawing from real life but the opportunity to be able to conjure up a whole new world from the deep sources of creativity contained within is an incredible opportunity.  When drawing dragons, it is worth realising that to achieve an incredible picture; you need to dig deep into your own imagination to be able to conjure up a convincing fire breathing creature.

There are some simple steps we can take to be able to ensure success:

-    Firstly, we do need to have a powerful image of the dragon so that it feels as if the creature might be real. This is important as if we cannot visualise the dragon in all its glory, then we will struggle to impart this data to paper.

-    Whether drawing a landscape, still-life, portrait or drawing dragons, the composition of the drawing is paramount and must be considered in the early stages of development.

-    Once you know what the total picture is going to look like i.e. the background scenery, the colours (if any) practising actually drawing dragons is the next step. Ideally, have a practice in your sketch pad first and once you feel confident in your dragon design, then you can begin your drawing in earnest. Make sure that you choose the right size of paper for your picture, the smaller the sheet of paper, the harder it is to draw.

-    Remember that dragons are historically supposed to be creatures which bring fear and awe to all those who would see it, so try to capture this fierceness by using the expression in the eyes and across the face to inspire rage and fury.

-    Always ensure you have the correct pencil for your project and also an eraser in case of mistakes, but do not be afraid to make any mistakes, as this is how artists develop their skills.

-    Finally, try not to become despondent if your picture does not come out exactly as you have imagined. Practice is essential whatever subject you are planning to draw but drawing dragons does stretch the artist’s imagination to the full.
