DIY bathroom projects can be a lot of fun and immensely satisfying. DIY bathroom projects range from simple decorating exercises to quite complicated renovation jobs, all of which are designed to improve what is often the most neglected room in our houses. Some DIY bathroom projects do require some type of skill, but with a bit of guidance and your own creativity, you will be surprised by what you can achieve.

We all use our bathrooms regularly, every day. In spite of this, baths are often unimaginative spaces that get damp and mouldly. Shower walls or bathroom ceilings slowly turn a motley grey that looks horrid and is quite unhealthy. Many of us splash water around when we bath, wash our hands or have a shower. And lots of us don't bother to dry the water up - which is why bathrooms often get smelly and damp.

While regular scrubbing and cleaning is the first step towards a clean and healthy bathroom, tiles and suitable paint surfaces will make this task easier and more effective. There are many other steps you can take as well.

If you're keen to tackle a bathroom project, start off by making a list of all the elements in your bath. Unless you have some knowledge of plumbing, don't include those that require plumbing. Make sure you do include:

- wall and floor surfaces,
- window coverings, including blinds and curtains,
- light fittings,
- cupboards and shelves, and
- other decorative items, if there are any.

Now think carefully about which of these elements you think you can improve yourself, without calling in a professional. Here are some ideas.

A wall-mounted medicine cupboard will enable you to store bottles and other unattractive items safely. A shelf offers the opportunity to display attractive bottles or decorative items. An attractive light fitting will often brighten up the room, but it must be a sealed unit because of the water. A new coat of paint is a good way to achieve an instant makeover with very little effort. Together with curtains and blinds, paint can introduce colour and pattern, or simply add to a clean, pure look in your bathroom. You might also consider wallpapering walls above existing tiles.

More complicated bathroom projects may involve tiling walls and floors, or retiling these surfaces. Just bear in mind that an involved renovation might involve changing the position of sanitary ware, in which case you might need the help of a plumber.

Whatever you choose to do, plan thoroughly and approach the project in an ordered, systematic way. Only tackle jobs you are confident you can complete yourself, and above all, enjoy what you are doing. Then you will be sure to be rewarded by a very special DIY bathroom.
