Abacomancy,  also known as“Amathomancy”, comes from the Greek word “Amathos”, which  means sand. Abacomancy is an antediluvian tradition, the pedigree and the approach to this mode of prophecy is lost in time. From what is known about it, abacomancy is a pious practise based on the elucidation of the patterns in sand, dirt, dust, silt or the recently departed person’s ashes. It is believed that one can percieve the future by reading these patterns. The sand, dust, dirt or ashes are spread on a flat surface and then the reader tries to figure out some pictures, symbols or patterns and then predicts the future depending upon what they see. Another approach is to look for symbols which might appear repeatedly, as this also has unique significance.

In one of the forms, the diviner takes the ashes of the the deceased on the tenth day and the person who lit the funeral prye is supposed to sprinkle a part of the ashes on a flat surface with a lamp placed near it. It is then kept covered with a basket overnight, and it is believed that the sole of the departed has passed-on into the animal whose motif appears on the ashes.

Texture and colour of the sand, dirt or dust is immaterial. The use of a metal platter or plate is good idea as it makes cleaning up easier, especially while collecting the matter for reuse. A tipped instrument like dowel or a wand is generally used for the purpose of abacomancy. By placing the tip of the wand on the metal surface and concentrating and relaxing upon a question the diviner reaches an entirely different plane of conciousness. The breathing technique is unique and has to be controlled, a little practise should set you up. On reaching subconcious level the diviner chooses a pattern or design depending upon the answer within them.

Some of the patterns and their meaning include, a big circle, which implies moving full circle on the track of life, or renewal of another phase after the completion of one, it means protection and balancing is required, a miniature circle, which means uncertainty and prevalence of small issues, disagreements, and the future seems to be closed to the diviner as he/she cannot see beyond the circle, due to its size. Some other patterns seen commonly are triangles, lines, hearts and spirals. The triangle symbolises equal power on all sides, the heart symbolises love and multitudinous lines represent embarkment on a long trip.
