I tutor students studying one particular long distance course in digital photography, and for their first assignment they are required to do quite a lot of practical work. For example, they have to choose two projects that could make them money if they were working in the field. The idea is to familiarise themselves with what is required. One possibility is to take pictures at a wedding. Some superb shots came from a complete newcomer who said he had learnt a huge amount by tailing the official photographer at his brother's wedding.
