Computer gaming is not just playing on a computer, it is any form of game that involves interaction between a user and an interface that generates a visual feedback on a video device. Personal Computer gaming is a form played on a personal computer. The platform used here, to run the game, is the computer. These systems can be large computers or small, specifically-built, hand-held devices. The input device used to control the game is called the Game Controller. This could either be a keyboard, a combination of a key board & mouse, a simple button & joystick combo or, as in modern day gaming consoles, a dozen buttons along with one or more joy sticks.

Beyond this, computer games utilize other systems to increase the level of interaction and information for the player. Some of these are speakers, headphones, etc. to utilize audio feedback for the player. Normally, a PC game is a computer program that involves a player who interacts with a personal computer, which is in turn connected to a high resolution video monitor.  A console game is played on an electronic device specifically engineered and built to run games, and is connected to a standard television set or display device. Arcade games are played on a specialized electronic device that is designed to play only one type of game, usually encased in a special cabinet.

Games can be classified into various genres on the basis of various criteria like, game play, goal, etc. The genres are quite flexible and keep on changing as new games are developed. Sometimes, a game may involve more than just one genre and hence their category again varies depending on their classifiable aspect, such as multiplayer, online, role-playing, etc. These games are primarily entertaining as they encompass many features normally seen individually in smaller games.

There are many other genres like educational games, advergames, propaganda games, etc. which are for more serious purposes. Games running on PC are often designed for end user modification, hence can be changed very easily. These modifications allow for replay ability with a new dimension and interest.

One of the most inexpensive and appropriate medium of game promotion, modification and play is the Internet. Making a game commercially successful can be greatly attributed to the online marketing, play and multiplayer involvement, which the World Wide Web has enabled us to do. Developers like id Software, Valve Software, Cryptek, Blizzard Entertainment introduce many developmental tools for modifications along with the original game. Modifications like Half- life and Counter strike are big successes.

It has been proved that action game players have improved visual-motor skills, such as resistance to distraction, sensitivity to information and their ability to count objects at a very high speed as compared to non-players. So, it can safely be said that games aren't all that bad.
