Paper collectibles have always been a popular collector category, mainly due to their broad range, low cost and in some cases high returns. Even storage costs are low, though they are somewhat more prone to damage. Paper collectibles could be anything from advertising collectibles, collectible trading cards, collectible newspapers, to collectible calendars or even collectible stock certificates or Scripophily. As a collector it is important you decide which of these categories you will collect, as paper collectibles can get easily out of hand, mainly due to easy availability.

Some other popular categories that come under paper collectibles are credit card collectibles, Valentine collectibles, collectible stickers, collectible postcards, collectible maps and globes, playing card collectibles and greeting card collectibles. The practice of Lotology, or collecting lottery tickets also comes under this segment, and so do paperweight collectibles and phone card collectibles. So your first step as a collector should be to select one of these categories, preferably one you are most passionate about.

Once you have decided what to collect, you will need to study the category, find out about the different varieties available under each. For example, paperweight collectibles come in a number of different materials, and styles, which give an indication of its age. To aid you in your research, refer as many books on the subject as possible, or join collector groups, which are a rich source of information, as well as actual collectibles. Almost all categories under paper collectibles, have numerous collector groups, either online or offline. For example, people indulging in Lotology - Collecting lottery tickets, will be glad to know that the Global Lottery Collector's Society has over 200 members, who regularly trade tickets, as well as information. Apart from this, collectible postcards have the Postcard Traders Association; collectible calendars are famous with the Calendar Collectors Society, and so forth.

After you equipped with enough information, you will need to locate the best places to obtain the paper collectibles of your choice. For items such as collectible newspapers, the whole point is to collect newspapers which contain information on important historical events. These can be found in your family home, talk to your grandparents if they have any old newspapers stored around. Since most forms of paper collectibles are widely distributed, you could ask friends and family to help. Whenever an important event occurs, save the newspaper, as it might be of great value in a few years. Sift through flea markets, yard sales and auctions, as you could find a lot of interesting paper collectibles here, like collectible postcards, collectible maps and globes, collectible stickers or even trading card collectibles.

After you have started your collection, you will need to find out the proper method for storage and maintenance. Since paper is acidic, it tends to disintegrate over time, which you can delay by avoiding exposure to direct sunlight or humidity. Make sure that you do not handle your paper collectibles with wet hands, if possible use tongs. Store all your paper collectibles in acid-free and air-tight boxes or albums, with Mylar sheets being the most ideal. But each category of paper collectibles has its own specific set of rules for storage and care, be sure to study them well to ensure increased life of your paper collectibles.
