Collectible grandfather clocks form a rare and interesting collection, apart from which they are also a great way to capture a part of history. But buying collectible grandfather clocks requires in depth knowledge about certain features of these items. Due to the high prices collectible grandfather clocks command, the research becomes all the more important, to avoid being duped.

An important feature one should find note about a collectible grandfather clock is its history. Ask the seller for as much detail as possible and watch out for vague descriptions. The first ever grandfather clock was created in 1670, by William Clement, an English watchmaker. Originally known as floor clock, grandfather clocks received their current name after Henry Wock created a song by that name in the 1880s.

The structure of the grandfather clock is another feature on which collectors differentiate. While some collectors prefer collectible grandfather clocks made of mahogany, others prefer oak, pine or even walnut. Most grandfather clocks are either 8 ? day or 30- hour clocks, though exceptions do exist.

After you have done enough research about the different types of grandfather clocks, you will need to learn how to value one. Even though this can be a little difficult, especially for a novice, one trick is to look for a signature, generally located on the movement of the dial of the clock. This is not a conclusive way of dating a grandfather clock, so you will need to use other methods of dating as well.

A clockmaker guide gives detailed information about the various significant clockmakers that collectors should know about, and also provides information on how to identify the maker of a clock. The signature of the clock sometimes gives out the name of the maker, so be sure to watch out for this indicator. But some sellers fake signatures to increase value of the item, so be alert for fakes.

The overall appearance of the clock is also an indicator of its value. If the clock still contains its original parts and is clean in appearance, its value will increase considerably. Try to obtain as big a discount on the item as possible, so you can make a profit on it at the time of selling.

The best places to get great pieces as well as great bargains is antique shops, though flea markets, garage sales, estate sales, newspaper classifieds and auctions are other options. With so many options, keeping your eyes open for such events should get you some enviable collectible grandfather clocks for your collection.
