Brewing Brown Porter at home is a breeze if you are accustomed to brewing beer at home. This smooth drink, known for its roasted flavor is a popular drink in England, from where it has originated. While brewing Brown Porter at home, you can make it as mild as you wish. This generally medium brown, sometimes dark brown, drink requires quite a bit of head retention as well as clarity. Also, while brewing Brown Porter at home, you need to keep in mind that the emphasis is more on malts rather than hops.

Unlike its stronger cousin, Irish Stout Porter, Brown Porter is less alcoholic and generally less bitter. To begin brewing Brown Porter at home, you will need to first collect the required items. This includes, British Black Patent, English 2-row Pale, Crystal Malt, both 60 L and 120 L, Brown Malt is also a good replacement, Dry Extra Light extract, English Chocolate Malt, ideal for that unique flavor, and for hops, Fuggles Pellets and Northern Brewer Pellets. Any sort of wheat malt can be used for this preparation so in case you cannot find any of the above, get some of a brand you are familiar with. For the yeast you are required to procure British Cask Ale, more specifically White Labs WLP005 British Ale should do perfectly.

Now you begin the process of brewing your own Brown Porter at home, by first mashing the grains. This should be done at 152 F, for around 60 minutes. Now you create the wort, which if you are familiar with brewing beer at home, is done by first boiling the extracts, do this for around 15-20 minutes. Now all that remains for you to be ready with your wort are the hops.

For that you need to boil the wort for another 40 minutes, adding the hops, where the Northern Brewer Pellets go in for the entire duration, and the Fuggles Pellets for only 15 minutes. After the wort has been boiling for 40 minutes, allow it to cool to at least 68 F. After this period, move the container into a dark place and allow it to ferment for at least two weeks. After fermentation stops, you are now ready to bottle your beer and enjoy the fruits of all the labor which has gone into brewing Brown Porter at home.
