Motorcycle racing is a sport also known as Moto racing or Bike racing. This sport involves motorcycles racing against each other on a pre-decided circuit. The circuit can be tarmac-based or off-road. The international body for the sanctioning of motorcycle racing is the FIM. Although most nations have their own governing bodies to manage the sport at their level, other independent governing bodies also exist, which operate on both national and international levels.
Road racing is primarily on tarmac-based roads, which can either be a closed public-road or a purpose-built racing circuit. The most famous format of this type of racing is the Grand Prix motorcycle racing. This format has three categories, the 125cc, the 250cc and the 800cc or MotoGP. The motorcycles used for these races are not production motorcycle, but are based on prototype machines. Superbike racing, another format of the sport, is road-base motocycle racing that uses production motorcycles often modified to suit the purpose. These modified vehicles have four-stroke engines of 800cc and 1200cc, for the twin category and 750cc and 1000cc, for four-cylinder machines. The overall appearance of these motorcycles must be similar to their counterparts on the road, barring the many sponsorship logos.
Supersport racing is similar to Superbike racing in that it also uses modified production vehicles. Bikes in this format are required to have four-stroke engines between 44cc and 600cc for four-cylinder machines and 600-750cc for twins. Supersport regulations are much more stringent than the Superbike racing.
Endurance racing, as the name suggests, tests the durability of the vehicle and the endurance threshold of the riders. In this event, multiple riders, for each team, try to cover a large distance in a single event. It can be run either to cover a fixed distance, in laps, as fast as possible or to cover a maximum distance in a fixed time. The riders are allowed to change during the race.
Side-car racing is unique as in this form of racing, the rider and a passenger together make the machine perform. The motorcycles used in this type of race are longer and built low to improve turning ability. The Motorcross format is similar to road racing but is carried out on an off-road track. This format usually runs on non-tarmac roads where the surface is usually mud, sand, grass or ice, with artificial or natural elevations. The riders usually have quite a number of jumps to traverse while running through a stipulated number of laps in the fastest time possible. Supercross is the indoor version of motorcross.
