Do it yourself or DIY as it is often called, is the practice of making or repairing things yourself, rather than buying something or getting a professional to make it.

The term has grown from the hardware stores that first provided for the home handyman, and now DIY can be applied to many varied practices. You can DIY anything from book publishing to therapeutic health practices. In this age of mass production, the uniqueness of DIY is often sought after. It is also valued as a de-stressing activity to offset our busy lifestyles. The simple act of following a process ourselves is grounding and soothing for many people.

Of course, necessity is the mother of invention and DIY was not so long ago a necessary skill to look after yourself and you family and property. Most people in early settlements developed particular skills which enabled them to be self sufficient, or exchange goods or services. When the Industrial Revolution made mass produced goods available, people had choices and for many there were lots of reasons to DIY. Besides the financial savings, the results could be custom made for the need.

If you are a person who gets satisfaction from working manually and seeing a job through all its stages then DIY is for you as hobby. You don’t have to go it alone either; there are lots of sources of information and step-by-step guides for this hobby. Just about every town has a hardware store where tools and supplies can be bought. So roll up your sleeves and enjoy this satisfying hobby with us!
