Magic is a form of illusion; it is also a form of entertainment. Magic, as an art form, truly exists for the sake of the audience, meaning that a magic trick must be more than just illusory. It must capture the attention and the awe of the audience. Magic without the music, comedy, or graceful movements, will lose its appeal quickly. Therefore, the would-be magician must practice not only the art, but also the flourish.
Getting Started
There are ample resources available for someone ready to start learning magic. Websites, videos, and books are all legitimate learning tools for the art. A hopeful magician will want to start by learning a couple of simple tricks that can expand by theme, like magic rings, or card tricks. One trick will lead to others. Before worrying about the entertainment portion of the trick, one must practice the illusion repeatedly until the sleight of hand is no longer visible. Once this becomes a fluid process, then the trick can be expanded into a series.
Types of Magic
Magic tricks fall into several categories. The first is in the form of self-performing tricks. The trick is easy for a magician once he knows how it works, because it is a matter of performing something that does not look possible, but is, like passing a quarter through a dime-size hole. If the paper is folded properly, the quarter passes through, but the audience does not understand this.
The second category is gimmicks. This form of magic requires trick objects, like a ring with an invisible weak spot or a deck of cards in which certain cards are slightly larger, making it possible for the magician to recognize them.
Some magic tricks rely on distraction. The magician attracts the audience's eyes away from his actions long enough to hide a coin or drop a ball. If the trick is done expertly, the audience will not note the action. Included in the category is illusions, which are often done on a grand scale. The distraction of the music and lights used make it possible for the magician to trick the audience into believing they have witnessed magic.
Importance of Entertainment
Magic relies heavily on the act that is going on around the magic for two reasons. First, the music or lights or comedy keep the audience engaged. Second, if planned correctly, it provides the distraction necessary for the magician to perform his tricks successfully. If all factors come together in the show, the audience will believe they are witnessing true magic.
