People have been keeping animals since the dawn of time so it's not surprising that having a pet is one of the most popular hobby the world over. There is a pet to suit everyone no matter where you live, and each brings its own rewards. Most families keep a pet at some time, and of course the favourites are cats and dogs. Some people consider themselves a dog or cat person but it is quite possible to enjoy the friendship of both together! Children can learn to care and be responsible for their animals and love to include them in family life, even when it comes to presents for holidays and birthdays!

There are plenty of things to consider before taking on a pet. What specific needs does an animal have, and can you meet them? Can you afford the costs of not only buying the pet, but also feeding and housing it, and possibly paying vet's bills? Adopting from an animal rescue centre can be very rewarding. It is important to choose the right pet for the space you have available, but whether you are able to keep a horse, or decide on a goldfish as hobby, you are sure to get a great deal of enjoyment from your pet.

The benefits of being around animals are no surprise to animal lovers. Even if you don't have one of your own, there are always zoos, wildlife parks, and animal sanctuaries, or spotting wildlife in its natural habitat.

Keeping animals can range from the unusual to the bizarre. Many people also combine their passion with livelihood, for example breeding horses or keeping bees. If you are prepared to invest financially in your hobby, you can indulge in exotic pets such as reptiles or spiders.

There's no doubt that it doesn't matter whether your particular preference is smooth, scaly, fluffy or sleek , keeping pets can be one of the most rewarding of all hobbies, for any age group.

For some, it doesn't even have to be real: there are lots of cute fluffy toys to collect!

Whatever your choice, keeping a pet will give you that warm, fuzzy feeling inside!
