Ylang Ylang oil may be not as well known as the more traditional Lavender and Rosemary essential oils, but it has a wonderful calming effect on both the mind and body. Ylang Ylang oil has an exotic and sweet aroma and can be used for personal relationships where physical difficulties may occur such as impotence or frigidity.  Ylang Ylang oil is cultivated in Sumatra and Madagascar amongst others and the oil is derived from the freshly picked flowers by way of steam or water distillation.

As with all essential oils, Ylang Ylang oil has contra-indications and these should be considered before use as although it is non-toxic, reports of headaches have been experienced but this may simply be due to over-use. For those who are inexperienced with using essential oils, it is a good idea to learn the basics by researching a list of all of the various unique properties relating to each oil prior to using.

Ylang Ylang oil can be used for the following conditions:

-    To help calm anxieties, shock and panic. It is also ideal to use as an anti-depressant and as a sedative. Because of its calming nature, it is useful for erratic heartbeat and for those who experience high blood pressure.

-    It also has aphrodisiac qualities and in Indonesia, flower petals are strewn across the marital bed on the wedding day. Additional positives are that it can also help those with personal marital problems.

-    Can be used effectively in vaporizers, in creams or lotions or as bath oil. It is quite a versatile oil and has many positive effects. As a bath oil, it can help with insomnia and helps to alleviate any tension or stress that may be experienced.

For those who are interested in blending their own oils for health reasons, Ylang Ylang oil blends well with bergamot oil, lavender, sandalwood and grapefruit essential oil.

The advantages of having aromatherapy as a hobby is that it has so many positive benefits because it can be used in the house, the home, the place of work as well as for stress management or treatments for a variety of conditions. If you are considering purchasing a number of oils for your own personal use, it may be worth considering the exotic properties of Ylang Ylang.
