Pet Insects
|
Insects are incredible, they are everywhere around us and even on an individual level if there are some that we are not overly keen on, they are impossible to ignore. Insects have managed to survive and adapt to the most extreme habitats from the highest mountains to the extreme cold of the Polar Regions to hot springs and caves.
Fossils depict that insects have been around for about 350 million years and were able to capitalise the skies probably 150 years before reptiles, mammals and of course birds. If we consider that there may be well over three million species of insects globally, it may not be surprising to consider that there are probably many still undiscovered insects out there.
Belonging to the Class Insecta, they belong to the Phylum ARTHROPODA referred to as the arthropods. Insects can be distinguished by the following characteristics:
- An exoskeleton which is divided into three parts
- Three pairs of legs
- One pair of antennae
- Many of the adults have wings
Insects hatch from eggs which have either been deposited when there is little embryonic development, or there may be advanced development and some pet insects eggs are retained inside the female until they begin to hatch. Very few Insects care for their young, most simply abandon them at oviposition. Insect eggs vary in shape, size and colour and the insect must force its way out of the shell when it is ready to hatch.
Most insects’ molt approximately 4 or 5 times but this varies as some need to molt up to 40 times. This is because the internal tissue grows and gets to the point where it is likely to exceed the exoskeleton. The exoskeleton is shed and replaced then with a larger exoskeleton. This process is governed by the release of hormones within the brain. Once the insect has released adult status, it no longer goes through the molting process.
Insects can also go through a metamorphosis and this is where their bodies change shape. There are different types of metamorphism:
Complete - which affects about 80% of insects
Gradual metamorphosis occurs in about 10%
Simple and incomplete metamorphosis occurs about 5% each.
For many people, pet insects are a fascinating addition to the natural world and as such have managed to become interesting for many to try to keep as pets.
