Pet Amphibians
|
Pet Amphibians appear in a beautiful and dazzling array of colours and this attracts many people to wanting to keep them as pets. Many of the species can be kept in captivity with ease and providing they have their basic needs attended to, they will live quite happily. They may not be ideal pets for young children but this is mainly because pet amphibians should be handled rarely and are really only visual pets.
As with all pets, it is vital that some research is undertaken prior to purchase and this includes having a good knowledge about how to care for them and also, information about the environment that they will be housed in. Most pet amphibians need to have an aqua-terrarium and this can best be described as a mixture of an aquarium and a terrarium. Essentially one side of the aquarium has water and the other has an area of dry land mass so that the pet amphibians can leave the water. Some species of pet amphibians would live primarily on land so the environment would need to be adapted for this, and this is where it is important to research their requirements thoroughly prior to purchase. They do need to be able to climb out of the water with relative ease so it is useful to have a rock in the water where they can sit and view their surroundings as well as using it as an access point to dry land
Pet Amphibians do have very sensitive skins and these can be easily damaged so careful handling is essential and it should be limited. Their diet tends to consist of invertebrates such as crickets and mealworms and these are easily purchased from your local pet store. Some people find it difficult to add live food to the environment however, if you have kept a healthy aqua-terrarium, quite often the crickets for example, will breed naturally and will live alongside your pets as they would in the wild. It is important that you check that there is plenty of live food still available for them at all times and purchase more if stock looks a little sparse. Keeping pet amphibians as pets can bring a slice of natural realism into your home enabling you to observe their behaviour as if in the wild.
