Pet Birds
Pet birds can make excellent additions to your home, provided you take care of them properly. Birds, like all other animals are sensitive to their surroundings, so providing them with ample care and all basic requirements is very important. Pet birds can be as attached to you as any other pet, even though they don’t display it the same way. Different species are quite different from each other, so reading up on the type you want before you bring home a pet bird is important.
But there are some basic rules that must be followed with regard to taking care of any pet bird. Before you buy any birds, be sure they are healthy. If you see any signs of illness, such as droopy expressions, sitting away from the rest of the birds, head hidden under wing, or droppings stuck on tail feathers, sneezing or any other abnormal symptom that may indicate an unhealthy bird, do not buy it, no matter how cheap. Look for bright eyes, good appetite, high energy and clean feathers, as birds which fulfill all these are the ones you should consider.
After you have brought home your pet bird, do get it checked out by an avian veterinarian, before settling it in its new home. Also ask your vet for advice on diet, medical care and maintenance, as s/he can give you the best advice. Now the cage that you keep your bird in must be the largest one that you can maintain. Remember that it is unnatural for birds to be kept in closed spaces, but since you want to keep it as a pet, be sure you give it enough room to move around. Make sure it is easily cleanable, and clean it regularly. You wouldn’t want to live in a dirty house, so don’t subject your pet bird to that either.
Another point is to ensure there are natural perches for the birds inside the cage. The types of wood that are acceptable include Eucalyptus, Madrona and also Manzanita. Make sure you rinse everything before introducing it to the bird. As far as food is concerned, the vet will tell you what your bird species eats the best. Nuts are never enough, so be sure to give extra items such as boiled egg, fruits, some cheese or even yogurt. Apart from all this, ensure that you keep the bird away from smoke, cooking smells, electric appliances that could hurt them, and also from poisonous house plants, as birds chew on anything. Be sure to watch out for signs of sickness as well, as any negative signs should be treated immediately. Also, be sure to get its wings and nails trimmed regularly, either by your vet, or if you are confident enough to not hurt the bird in the process, yourself.
Pets of any kind entail a lot of responsibility, so only get pet birds if you are ready to do everything it takes to keep them happy. And just like all other pets, you can find a true friend in your pet bird.
