Pet Rodents
|
There are about 1500 species of rodents but there are those species which are the most popular to keep as pets, these are easily purchased from your local pet stores. Rodents do tend to make popular pets especially for children because of their small size and they are often friendly and affectionate which are behaviours that make them practical pets and they also have the ‘cute’ factor. They are ideal for those people who are young or who are unable to keep larger animals due to having size restrictions within the property
Rodents are herbivores mainly and do need to eat constantly, they have front teeth known as incisors and these continue to grow throughout their lives, if these incisors become overgrown they can cause real problems to the rodent. It can usually be controlled however by giving them wood to chew on or there are toys available from pet shops which are designed for them to gnaw away at.
Rodents include the following:
Rats
Rats make lovely pets to keep although for many people, the tails are off-putting. Rats need to have a larger cage than a hamster for example and as these are nocturnal animals, they may not be the right choice for a child. Their life-span tends to be for about five years so prepare to invest in their care for that time period. Because they are sociable animals, it can be nice to have more than one.
Hamsters
These are small and relatively easy to care for and are quite entertaining. They do possess good climbing skills and they can be handled fairly well, so they do make fairly good pets for children. Hamsters live for about two to three years.
Guinea Pigs
Guinea Pigs are awake during the day and are strictly herbivorous. They can make for very charming pets and can be extremely vocal. They make great pets for children as they very rarely bite; they tend to live longer than Hamsters in that they live between five and eight years.
Always read up on the pet rodents of your choice before making a final decision, as whether they live only a short time or up to eight years, they are still a commitment and require us to give them the best care and surroundings as possible.
