Dogs are extremely intelligent animals and make for a wonderful addition to every family. It is worth realising that having a dog as a family pet is a long-term commitment far more so than having a cat.

Owning a dog is similar to raising a young child as they do need a great deal of care in that they need attention, love, care and training and they do need to have plenty of time bestowed on them for long walks.

Dogs can live on average for ten –fifteen years and can become wonderful companions for all ages and there are so many different breeds so that there will be a breed to suit everyone’s lifestyle and surroundings.

Breeds include:

Border Collie
Cocker Spaniel
Dalmatian
English Bulldog
Jack Russell
Labrador
Poodle

There are many different ways of obtaining your puppy and this can be from reputable breeders, through local advertising, from Vet Surgeries and of course from dog homes where there are many dogs waiting to be re-homed.

Dogs will need vaccinations and medical treatments from time to time and this of course can be costly although it is worth taking out medical insurance for your pet to help combat big expenses.

Dogs need a good diet to ensure that they stay healthy and this means a balanced diet of fat, carbohydrates, minerals and proteins. There are many canned dog foods available from supermarkets or pet stores and there are also dried biscuits containing all of the relevant nutrients required.

Puppies need small meals throughout the day and as the puppy develops the type of food and amounts will need to be adjusted depending on the size and breed of the dog.
Fortunately, there are vast amounts of information available when planning to add a puppy to the household.

Not only is their feeding and walking duties to incorporate into your day, there will be regular grooming and training also and the amount of grooming obviously depends on whether short or long haired.

Having a dog as a member of the family is wonderful but it is worth double-checking that you choose the right breed for your family and environment.
