Beekeeping is a Hobby that is interesting and lucrative!

Beekeeping or apiculture is considered one of the most fruitful hobby ideas as it will help you to make money when you sell honey and wax. It will be interesting to know that bees are among the oldest domesticated animals. This is counted to be one of the oldest methods of food production.

So what exactly is beekeeping? It is the practice of humans maintaining and cultivating beehives.

There are several reasons for doing this:

To collect honey
To collect beeswax
To sell bees to other people
To pollinate flowers, berries, fruits, vegetables and crops
To collect Royal Jelly - a nutritious dietary supplement
To obtain Propolis - used for centuries for its reputed health properties e.g. for sore throats, & to boost the immune system, as a natural antibiotic!

Beekeeping as a money-making hobby

Beekeepers or apiarists are usually concerned about the collection of honey and beeswax as well as the selling of bees. Beekeeping will also leads to pollination of flowers, fruits, berries, vegetables and crops and the collection of Royal Jelly, a nutritious dietary supplement.

The making of the hive

Beekeepers should know how to make the hive, as it is an integral part of their best hobby. For beekeeping, making the hive is an essential part. The hive is built with a series of wooden boxes and frames. The boxes and frames contain wax sheets that help the bees to build their honeycomb. The hive is designed in such a manner that the top box of the hive holds the honey and the box beneath holds the bees.

The beekeepers have to be fully aware that bees can sting - so they need to take precautions while collecting honey. Protective clothing and smoke is used as protection.

Honey collection in the two hemispheres

Among all the hobbies, beekeeping is among the top hobbies. In the Northern Hemisphere, beekeepers harvest honey in the summers and the rest of the year is spent taking care of the hive. In the Southern Hemisphere, the honey is usually collected all over the year and this depends on the winter climate of the region.
