To most of us, an aquarium is a wonderful display of underwater life. It is often used as an enhancing feature in home and work environments, providing ambience and tranquillity.

Aquarium is a word used to describe a structure used to house anything from one to thousands of aquatic animals and plants. It can also be home to reptiles, amphibians and marine mammals. The hobby of cultivating aquariums dates back to ancient times, and goldfish have been bred in China for centuries. Today, the goldfish is still the most popular breed of fish, with the tropical guppy also a firm favourite.

An aquarium is made of glass or extra strong plastic and there are now many new technologies enabling the enthusiast to create authentic environments for even the most demanding species. Keeping an aquarium is an enormously popular pastime, with at least 60 million enjoying its pleasures worldwide. Of course, there are also the stunning public aquariums to visit where you can see larger, and sometimes endangered, species. In many large public aquariums, you can walk through tunnels built in and under the glass and experience the next best thing to actually being underwater!

There are some things to consider when you decide to keep fish of any sort. Will you be happy with a goldfish in a bowl, or are you looking for more exotic species? Your choice of fish will determine whether you need fresh or salt water, and if it must be heated for tropical species. To reproduce your pets? natural environment as closely as possible is a skill requiring careful attention to details, and a good working knowledge of the nitrogen cycle. There is the delicate balance of food and waste to be maintained, and it is good idea to check out the compatibility of species when planning your aquarium. It can be very distressing to see a new addition disappear before you!

All these requirements can seem daunting but the rewards are worth it. There are many sources of information to draw on as well as groups of enthusiasts and , of course, your local pet shop .A trip to look at the many varieties available is inspiring and, remember, many people start small and go on to develop this fascinating hobby into a full blown passion! Keeping an aquarium can be a magical addition to your life.
